The governors from the South-East and South-South geopolitical zones have converged on Owerri, the Imo State capitalunder the auspices of South-East/South-South Governors Forum, in continuation of their inter-regional integration initiatives.

The meeting, which marked the third time since their coming together, held at the Government House, Owerri on Sunday 8th October 2017, and rose in the midnight of the same day.

Welcoming his guests, Gov. Rochas Okorocha of Imo State disclosed the meeting would discuss the peace, development, unity, understanding, progress and cooperation as they concern the two zones in particular and the nation at large.

“We are here for the common good of our dear nation, Nigeria and her teeming population. We are here for the good of all,” he said while expressing the hope that the meeting would come up with “opinions and ideas that will, to a large extent, help our states individually and collectively and also help our nation greatly.”

Gov. Okorocha added that the coming together of the governors of the two zones to deliberate on the way forward was enough to excite all men and women of goodwill, adding that it showed their resolve to devote less time to partisan politics and talk about development and those things that unite them.

He, however, advocated  a constitutional amendment to make it possible for governors to go to states other than theirs to serve for three months, saying by so doing, the unity of the country would be strengthened.

“I know that one day, in the course of the history of this nation, Nigerians will rise to such a height that the Igbos, Ijaws, Efiks, Hausas, Fulanis, Itshekiris, Idomas, and all, will be talking as one people, and the issue of where one comes from, won’t be a serious issue again,” he landed.

The Chairman of the forum, the Akwa-Ibom State Governor Emmanuel Udom stated the forum is concerned by the calls for a breakaway by some leaders adding that it is a worrying development.

“This forum is also concerned with the voices that are calling for self determination from some sections of our dear country. We are worried about the state of the nation which has given rise to growing agitations from all over the country. From the North to the South, East and West.

“Also of concern are the issues of justice, fairness, and equity which many believe are in deficit in our country,” he said.
Gov. Udom went further to say the forum irrespective of political differences had come together to chat a new course that would foster economic interest and integration for the region and member states.

The governors present at the meeting include Governors of Abia State Okezuo Ikpeazu, Delta State Ifeanyi Okowa, Imo State (Host) Rochas Okorocha, Rivers State,Nyesom Wike, Cross-River State Benedict Ayade, Bayalsa State Seriaki Dickson, Enugu State Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi as well as the Deputy governor of Anambra State Nkem Okeke.
