BREAKING: Popular Alleged Kidnapper 'Evans' Returns to Lagos, Appears in Court Today

Popular Alleged Kidnapper 'Evans' Returns to Lagos, Faces Arraignment Today

The popular alleged billionaire kidnapper, Mr. Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike otherwise known as Evans is to make his first appearance in a Lagos State court many weeks after his arrest.

'Evans' flanked by Security cum Press personnel

Rostrum gathered that Evans will reportedly appear on Wednesday, August 30, before the Ikeja division of the Lagos High Court. The report quoted a source in the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) as saying "Evans is scheduled to appear before Justice Hakeem Oshodi as the Attorney-General of Lagos state, Adeniji Kazeem will lead the prosecution team".

However, Mr. Olukoya Ogungbeje, the lawyer who filed a fundamental rights enforcement suit on behalf of Evans against the police at a federal court in Lagos, claimed he did not have any information of the likely arraignment of Evans.
It would be recalled that 'Evans' was arrested in his Magodo Estate home in Lagos on June 10 by a special team led by the Nigeria's government Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari. He would now likely be prosecuted according to the anti-kidnapping laws of Lagos State and would be facing charges of armed robbery, kidnapping and murder among others.

On Tuesday 29th August 2017, Mr. David Igbodo, the lawyer to the police on the case of fundamental rights against the law enforcement agency in relation to Evans, said the investigation into his alleged crime was almost concluded.

According to the counsel “The case is a very controversial one, it is a sensitive case. The Inspector-General of Police devoted time, efforts, intelligence, and strategies to ensure that he was arrested. He beat strategies for the past six years. When he was arrested, it took time for the police to complete investigations and very soon, Nigerians will be made to know what is the next line of action for Evans.”

He further disclosed that as a lawyer, the IGP Mr. Ibrahim Idris respects the rights of citizens.
“He has been organising conferences and seminars for the Nigeria Police, both investigators and prosecutors, to make sure nobody is kept in custody beyond 24 or 48 hours without an order of a court of competent jurisdiction. The Inspector General of Police cannot keep Evans without a court order, there is a valid court order that is still subsisting as I speak with you for three months. You know Evans was arrested on the 10th of June; since when he was arrested till now, it’s not up to three months". he said.

The argument has been that most of the accused activities were carried out in Lagos State where he was also arrested in his Magodo Estate mansion.

US FLOODING: Harvey Will Ruin An Estimated Half a Million Vehicles in Houston

Harvey Likely To Ruin About 500,000 Cars, Trucks
_________________________________________

There are scores of cars and trucks with water up to their windows and in some cases over the hood and roof.

In fact, the flooding is so extensive, Cox Automotive estimates a half-million vehicles may wind up in the scrap yard.
"This is worse than Hurricane Sandy," said Jonathan Smoke, chief economist for Cox Automotive. "Sandy was bad, but the flooding with Hurricane Harvey could impact far more vehicles."

After Hurricane Sandy battered New York and New Jersey in October 2012, an estimated 250,000 vehicles were scrapped.

While the New York metropolitan area has more residents than Houston, the number of vehicles per household is much higher in Houston.

That means more cars, trucks and SUVs were parked on the street and in garages when Harvey swamped the city and surrounding areas.

With so many vehicles in the flood zone, auto insurers will be busy handling claims and cutting checks so flood victims can buy another car or truck. Auto dealers are expecting a surge in business once Houston gets back on its feet.

Those shopping for a used car may be surprised at the prices they see. Used-car values are already close to a record high, and Mannheim Auto Auctions says prices could climb even higher over the next couple of weeks due to the tighter supply.

Meanwhile, not all of the flooded vehicles will wind up in the salvage yard. Many will be cleaned up and resold, often without the new buyer realizing they are buying a salvaged car or truck.
"It's going to happen, that's inevitable," said Frank Scafidi with the National Insurance Crime Bureau. "Look at all those vehicles floating around. There are people who will try to take advantage of the situation."

The resale of repaired flooded cars is not illegal, as long as the flood damage is disclosed on the title to buyers. After Hurricane Katrina, thousands of rebuilt flood vehicles were sold to unsuspecting buyers with titles that had been washed or reissued in a different state.

"We didn't see this on a huge scale until Hurricane Katrina," said Scafidi. "Since then the public awareness of the problem is greater, but with thousands of flooded vehicles it's hard to prevent this from happening."

OPINION I Today Is Int'l Day Against Nuclear Tests

PREACHING PEACE AT ALL COST AS WE MARK 2017 INT’L DAY AGAINST NUCLEAR TESTS

By Fred Doc Nwaozor

The last time I checked, August 29 annually remained the International Day Against Nuclear Tests. This implies that today being Tuesday, Nigeria joins the global community in commemorating the 2017 edition of the said day.

The International Day Against Nuclear Tests is aimed towards capturing global attention and underscore the need for a unified attempt in preventing further nuclear weapons’ testing through educational events and messages.

On 2nd December 2009, the 64th session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly declared August 29 of every year as the International Day Against Nuclear Tests. The resolution calls for increasing awareness and education on the effects of nuclear weapon test explosions, among other related explosions, and the need for their cessation as one of the means of achieving the goal of witnessing a nuclear-weapon-free world.

The resolution was initiated by the Republic of Kazakhstan, coupled with a large number of sponsors and co-sponsors with a view to commemorating the closure of the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test site, which had caused an enormous and indelible problem to mankind.

This remarkable and laudable day is meant to sensitize the UN Member States alongside inter-governmental and non-governmental organizations, academic institutions, youth networks and the media on the need to inform, educate as well as advocate the necessity of banning nuclear weapon tests as a valuable step towards achieving a safer global society.

The inaugural commemoration of the day was marked in the year 2010, thus this year’s commemoration represents the 8th edition of the worthwhile crusade. Ab initio, each year, the day has been observed by coordinating various activities throughout the world, such as conferences, exhibitions, competitions, workshops, seminars, publication of periodicals cum journals, media broadcasts, and what have you.

Several bilateral and multilateral governmental level developments coupled with broad movements of various civil societies and personal efforts of the UN Secretary-General have helped tremendously to facilitate the ongoing cause regarding banning of nuclear tests worldwide. We are equally required to put in our respective efforts toward sensitizing the people within us, particularly the youth, on the dangers inherent in making use of any form of nuclear weapon for any purpose whatsoever.

In May 2010, all the parties involved in the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons committed themselves towards achieving the peace and security of a world without nuclear weapons and other related instruments. In his candid speech, the immediate past UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon stated with great clarity that, ‘A world free of nuclear weapons would be a global public good of the highest order.’

This event as well as other related events or actions has fostered a global society with more optimistic prospects towards a world free of nuclear weapons. The event has enabled mankind to witness various visible signs of progress in respect to ending this global menace, though challenges remain inevitable in various fields of human endeavour.

Hence, we must all, individually or collectively, contribute our various quotas in tackling the challenges by ensuring that people around us are duly educated on the demerit of bad influence and uncalled environments since it has been proven beyond doubts that ‘Environment determines the action of the mind’ as was asserted by the late philosopher, Karl Marx.

It’s the hope of the UN that one day all nuclear weapons would be totally eliminated from the entire world. In view of this anticipation, there’s a compelling need for Nigeria at large to observe this day with all manner of sincerity as we work towards promoting peace and security all over the world. It’s needless to reiterate that humanity in its entirety prays vehemently for a trouble-free society or atmosphere; suffice it to say that every sane person strongly detests imagining the emergence of war or any war-related activity.

So, as the world commemorates the International Day Against Nuclear Tests, there’s need for every rational and peace-loving individual to support the remarkable movement that’s aimed toward initiating a holistic trouble-free atmosphere, thereby discouraging the occurrence of war or crisis of any kind. And, this support is mostly needed from countries such as Nigeria, Syria, Pakistan, Iraq, Israel, Palestine, Iran, and Ukraine, just to mention but a few, that are presently savaged by colossal security challenges.

To this end, I call on the legislators to pass a strict and grievous law that would ensure that anyone caught as well as found guilty of this inhuman act is thoroughly penalized. On its part, the executive arm is equally expected to safeguard the proposed law by setting up a formidable corrupt-free monitoring agency that would serve as an eye of the government toward its sustenance.

It’s worthy of note that a decisive and candid approach by the Nigerian government regarding the promotion of this annual global occasion would go a long way to eradicate the lingering barbaric actions of the Boko Haram sect, Niger Delta Avengers, and other terrorist cum insurgent groups that are presently on the rampage across the country.

The religious bodies, various schools and the mass media, among other relevant civil-society groups, can equally assist in promoting the ongoing cause by organizing seminars, workshops, street awareness, conventions, conferences, and so on that would sensitize the general public on the dangers of any form of crisis or the use of any war explosive.

Thus, we are all bound to preach peach at all cost with a view to embracing that society which we all yearn for. ‘A stitch in time saves nine’; needless to say that the time to act is now. Think about it!

Monday, 28th August 2017 was another shocking moment in the lives of the teeming fans of the billionaire businessman Dr. Ifeanyi Ubah as one of his closest political rivals Chief Oseloka Obaze graciously emerged as the gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), thereby making the latter eligible to fly the party’s flag in the fast approaching November 18 governorship election in Anambra State, Nigeria.

Dr. Ubah

Chief Obaze defeated the well-celebrated oil mogul, Dr. Ubah as well as Alex Obiogbulu and Sen. Stella Oduah, to clinch the ticket of the party.

A total of 958 delegates took part in the one-day exercise, and at the end, Chief Obaze - a former Secretary to the State Government - emerged victorious with 672 votes, while Mr. Obiogbolu came a distant second with 190 votes. BREAKING: The World's Oldest City Is Getting A Makeover

The World’s Oldest Living City is Getting a Makeover
___________________________________________

Varanasi, Hinduism’s holiest site on the Ganges River in northern India, is one of 100 places earmarked to receive trillions of rupees to transform their aging infrastructure and become ‘Smart Cities,’ replete with affordable housing, improved sanitation, and better transportation. To build it all, India plans to triple its steel-making capacity, making it the world’s second-biggest producer, trumping Japan, and reviving an industry that a year ago was on its knees.
Workers work inside a steel plant in Raigarh, Chhattisgargh, India.
“India is one of the bright spots for the global steel industry,” said Bijoy Thomas, a senior analyst at India Ratings & Research, the local unit of Fitch Ratings, by phone from New Delhi. “We have a very low base of per-capita consumption and the nation is on the path to development.”
India used about 63 kilograms of steel per person last year, compared with 493 kilograms in China, according to the World Steel Association. That low consumption base, and the promise of a government-backed boom in construction, has prompted a flurry of expansion plans as steel prices recover from a slump in 2015.

India’s biggest producer, JSW Steel Ltd., plans to build two new plants of 10 million tons each in the resource-rich states of Odisha and Jharkhand, and spend billions more expanding its existing mills in an effort to double its size by 2030. Rival Tata Steel Ltd. has sought environmental clearances to expand its two plants in India by 4 million tons a year.
India’s ambitious plans could force the country increasingly to turn to global markets to get enough coking coal and iron ore, Thomas said

SHOCKING: Nigeria's Military To Monitor The Internet Over Hate Speech

Nigeria's Military To Monitor The Internet Over Hate Speech

In what could be described as shocking by the teeming Nigerians, the new media otherwise known as the 'social media', is not anymore a hiding place as the Nigeria's military had set up strategic media centres to scrutinize 'anti-government activities' on the said platform.

Major-Gen. Enenche

The Director of Defence Information, Major-General John Enenche disclosed this on Tuesday August 22, 2017 while reacting to a media outing on the Channels Television.
According to the boss, 'the military has started paying more attention to the activities of Nigerians on social media as a reaction to the rise in misinformation and hate speeches' that had been a major challenge to the Nigeria's polity.
He further stated that these actions were capable of destabilizing the country's security and unity, thus the military was damn prepared to avoid the occurrence of such ugly foreseen circumstance.
It would be recollected that in recent times huge uncalled socio-political trending had been on rampage on the new media, thereby overheating the polity, though the Rostrum ICT crew gathered that such happening could not be said to be peculiar to the Nigerian society as reports indicate its ubiquitous nature.

FULL TEXT: President Buhari's Nationwide Speech

Full Content Of President Buhari's Nationwide Address

My dear citizens,

I am very grateful to God and to all Nigerians for their prayers. I am pleased to be back on home soil among my brothers and sisters.

2. In the course of my stay in the United Kingdom, I have been kept in daily touch with events at home. Nigerians are robust and lively in discussing their affairs, but I was distressed to notice that some of the comments, especially in the social media have crossed our national red lines by daring to question our collective existence as a nation. This is a step too far.

3. In 2003 after I joined partisan politics, the late Chief Emeka Ojukwu came and stayed as my guest in my hometown Daura. Over two days we discussed in great depth till late into the night and analysed the problems of Nigeria. We both came to the conclusion that the country must remain one and united.

4. Nigeria’s unity is settled and not negotiable. We shall not allow irresponsible elements to start trouble and when things get bad they run away and saddle others with the responsibility of bringing back order, if necessary with their blood.

5. Every Nigerian has the right to live and pursue his business anywhere in Nigeria without let or hindrance.

6. I believe the very vast majority of Nigerians share this view.
7. This is not to deny that there are legitimate concerns. Every group has a grievance. But the beauty and attraction of a federation is that it allows different groups to air their grievances and work out a mode of co-existence.

8. The National Assembly and the National Council of State are the legitimate and appropriate bodies for national discourse.

9. The national consensus is that, it is better to live together than to live apart.

10. Furthermore, I am charging the Security Agencies not to let the successes achieved in the last 18 months be a sign to relax.

11. Terrorists and criminals must be fought and destroyed relentlessly so that the majority of us can live in peace and safety.

12. Therefore we are going to reinforce and reinvigorate the fight not only against; elements of Boko Haram which are attempting a new series of attacks on soft targets · kidnappings, farmers versus herdsmen clashes, in addition to ethnic violence fuelled by political mischief makers. We shall tackle them all.

13. Finally, dear Nigerians, our collective interest now is to eschew petty differences and come together to face common challenges of; economic security, political evolution and Integration, as well as lasting peace among all Nigerians.

14. I remain resolutely committed to ensuring that these goals are achieved and maintained. I am so glad to be home.

15. Thank you and may God bless our dear Nation.

Trump Fires White House's Chief Strategist, Bannon

Saturday, 19th August 2017 was another shocking moment in the revered America's Seat of Power, the White House, as President Donald Trump outrightly removed the renowned architect of his 2016 election victory and a driving force behind his pro-national cum anti-globalization agenda, Mr. Steve Bannon who was appointed by the boss as his Chief Strategist the moment he assumed duty as the number-one American citizen.

      L-R: Mr. Trump, Mr. Bannon

OPINION I Today is World Humanitarian Day

PROMOTING SELFLESS SERVICE TO HUMANITY AS WE COMMEMORATE THE 2017 WORLD HUMANITARIAN DAY

By Fred Doc Nwaozor

August 19 each year, the world over commemorates the World Humanitarian Day. This signifies that today, Saturday, 9th of August, the global community marks the 2017 edition of the World Humanitarian Day

The day is an annual and international day dedicated to recognize humanitarian personnel and those who have lost their lives while working for humanitarian causes. The event was designated by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly as part of a Swedish-sponsored General Assembly Resolution on the strengthening of the coordination of emergency assistance of the UN.

This year's theme is 'civilians are not a target'. It is aimed towards ensuring that every civilian is duly safeguarded by all means in any arena marred by any form of conflict or violence.

The World Humanitarian Day is a time to recognize those who face danger and adversity while helping others. The day was set aside to coincide with the anniversary of the 2003 bombing of the UN headquarters in Baghdad – Iraq, which claimed twenty-two (22) lives including the live of the then Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General to Iraq in the person of Sergio Vieira de Mello.

The invention of August 19 as World Humanitarian Day was the outcome of the relentless efforts of Sergio Vieira de Mello Foundation coupled with the partnership of the deceased’s family with the Ambassadors of France, Switzerland, Japan, as well as Brazil in both Geneva and New York tabling and steering the draft resolution through the UN General Assembly. All the efforts of the Foundation was to ensure that the tragic loss of the said hero among his twenty-one (21) colleagues, and all the humanitarian personnel who have made the ultimate sacrifices in relieving the suffering of the victims of humanitarian crises were not in vain.

Sergio Vieira de Mello who was a citizen of Brazil, South America dedicated his lifetime spanning over thirty years in the UN, serving in some of the most challenging humanitarian situations in the world to reach the voiceless victims of armed conflict, alleviate their suffering and draw global attention to their plights. His death alongside twenty-one of his colleagues on 19th August 2003 in Baghdad, Iraq deprived the victims of armed conflict worldwide of a unique humanitarian leader of unmatched courage, drive and empathy who championed their cause fearlessly and clearly engraved their plight on the world map.

The tragic event also robbed the humanitarian community of an outstanding leader and intellectual whose thought, philosophy, dynamism and courage inspired all, and remains a timeless legacy to emulate by generations yet unborn. Mindful of this legacy, in 2006 the family of the late humanitarian icon and a group of close friends founded the Sergio Vieira de Mello Foundation dedicated to continue his unfinished mission of encouraging dialogue between communities and relieving the predicament faced by the victims of humanitarian crises.

The World Humanitarian Day was commemorated for the first time on 19th August 2009. Suffice to say that, this year’s commemoration is the eighth of its kind in the history of the worthwhile event. As the international community marks the event today, we are all urged to borrow a leaf from the indelible landmark achievements of the great warrior and legend – Sergio Vieira de Mello. To this end, we are all expected to strive towards promoting selfless service in our respective endeavours at all costs.

Surely, the most important thing to any man remains his or her welfare. Welfare could be referred to as one’s well-being, or organized efforts to ensure the basic well-being of people in need. Since the term ‘humanitarianism’ has to do with human welfare, it is of no need reiterating the fact that this remarkable event widely known and recognized as World Humanitarian Day was set aside to sensitize mankind on the cogent need for people to help one another, and for anyone to support any crusade that is targeted to promote lending hand to persons that are in need or victimized.

We must be willing and ready to volunteer ourselves whenever our services are required in our various jurisdictions. It’s very disheartening to notice that whenever tragic incident occurred, some persons’ intent is usually how they would benefit from the crisis. Rather than preoccupy our mindsets with such devilish intention, we are bound to take into cognizance that no one who benefits from a crisis scene lives a happy life regardless of his/her status. To this end, it’s our duty to ensure that we bring succour to the needy, or those victimized by a crisis such as war, terrorism, religious extremism, massacre, and genocide, just to mention but a few.

Furthermore, since no one ever wishes to be in a community or society made up of only him or her, thus we ought to ensure that the sustenance of the well-being of our relatives, friends, neighbours, colleagues, associates, or what have you, as the case may be, is at all times our civic responsibility. By so doing, we can boast of a peaceful society filled with thoroughly united individuals.

So, as Nigeria joins the global community to commemorate the World Humanitarian Day, I enjoin every relevant body to include the religious institutions, civil society, mass media, governments at all levels and well-meaning individuals, among others, to do everything humanly possible toward ensuring that selfless service to humanity is deeply promoted come rain come shine.

In his words, the immediate past UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said, ‘In a world that is ever more digitally connected, each of us has the power and responsibility to inspire our fellow human beings to act to help others and create a more humane world’.

WE note at all times that we were all created to be one indivisible body irrespective of our individual affiliations. Hence, we are meant to contribute our quota to ensure that we actualize such laudable motive initiated by nature no matter the challenges.

The government on its part ought to equally consider the welfare of its citizenry as their civil rights, thus must be treated as a priority, and not optional. Think about it!

Strike Continues As Latest ASUU, FG Meeting Rises In Deadlock

Thursday, 17th August 2017 would have been yet another golden opportunity for the Federal Government (FG) to resolve the ongoing 5-day-old industrial action of the Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU) as the aforementioned 'warring' bodies met in Abuja - the Nigeria's capital territory - precisely at the conference room of the Labour and Employment Minister on the said day but rose without reaching any tangible conclusion.

However, the good news was that the parties involved in the negotiations, including the Education Minister Mr. Adamu Adamu and his Labour and Employment counterpart Dr. Chris Ngige as well as the representatives of the aggrieved party (ASUU) led by its National President Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, agreed to reconvene within one week to continue from where they stopped.
In their separate press briefings immediately after the several-hour meeting, both bodies informed categorically that there was enormous progress 'following offers tendered by the FG and the response of the ASUU on the new offers'.

 Prof. Ogunyemi

Notwithstanding, when pushed further by the Rostrum crew, none agreed to disclose the 'offers' raised as Prof. Ogunyemi stated that he alongside his delegation team would take the outcome to the ASUU members towards reaching an unanimous agreement on it.
It would be recalled that the ASUU outrightly embarked on an indefinite strike on Monday, August 14, 2017 over various perceived maltreatments from the FG having exhausted its patience.

SHOCKING: Macron's Popularity On The Decline, As Working Class Perceives Maltreatment

Macron's Popularity On The Decline, as Working Class Perceives Maltreatment

Failure to tap into the needs of the French working class has left the reputation of the 39-year-old President Mr. Emmanuel Macron battered, thereby paving way for the far-left leader to pounce.

At the political tender age of 39, the European Union (EU) favourite Mr. Macron shook up French politics, fighting off competition from nationalist leader Mr. Marine Le Pen as he swept to victory in the French last presidential polls.
It would be recalled that in his bid to get into the Elysee Palace, the En Marche Movement leader who took over power on 14th May 2017 described himself as the 'man on the move', saying his mission was not to bring together the rightists or the leftists but to 'bring together the French people'.
However, Rostrum gathered that as against his popularity that was elevated in the polls, Mr. Macron is now under renewed pressure from the working class who reportedly decried that the young president had not lived up to their expectations.

According to the official report, the attack was repelled by the guards on duty.
Rostrum Crime crew gathered that the invaders escaped in a getaway vehicle dropping a white envelope containing a death threat to Mr. Ishaku Sharu, a Senior Investigator with the commission.
Mr. Sharu who currently heads the Foreign Exchange Malpractices Fraud Section, is in-charge of corruption investigation involving several politically exposed individuals as well as top retired military officers.
It's noteworthy that the attack came barely few weeks after another investigator, Mr. Austin Okwor was shot and severely wounded by unknown assailants in the city of Port-Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.
Rostrum further learnt that the bad omen had already been reported to the police for onward investigations.
