Four Cogent Reasons ASUU Embarked on Indefinite Strike
____________________________________________
The leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU) on Sunday, August 13, 2017, directed its overall members across the country to henceforth embark on an indefinite Industrial Action. The affected individuals are by the notice, expected to steer clear of lecture classes, supervision of seminar cum project works, attending any meeting whatsoever, and what have you.
Prof. Ogunyemi (Ist right) flanked by colleagues
In his nationwide address made on Monday, 14th August in Abuja the Nigeria's capital territory, the National Chairman of the body Professor Biodun Ogunyemi categorically disclosed that the strike was informed by the Federal Government's inability to implement the 2009 agreement between the ASUU and the government as well as the 2013 Memorandum of Understanding signed by the two bodies. The boss who stated that the ASUU's members have exhausted their patience, further urged all patriots and concerned stakeholders to prevail on the government to do the needful.
It's noteworthy that both the federal and state owned universities are required to comply with the mandate.
However, further investigations made by the Rostrum revealed that the four (4) major factors that necessitated the industrial action are as follows:
1. Government's insensitivity towards funding for the revitalization of public universities and earned academic allowances.
2. Crisis trailing the registration of Nigerian Universities' Pension Management Company (NUPEMCO).
3. Fractionalization and non-payment of salaries.
4. Unsolved issues concerning the University Staff Schools.
It would be recalled that in December 2015, the present government under the watch of President Muhammadu Buhari ordered immediate retrenchment of the over 2,000 staff of the various University Unity Schools situated across the Nigerian state as measures had been taken to close down the said foundation institutions.

Exposed: 4 Technical Facts You Didn't Know About The Owerri Collapsed Building
Four Technical Facts You Didn't Know About The Owerri Collapsed Building
_________________________________________________________
It is not anymore news that an uncompleted 2-storey building situated along Egbu Road Owerri - the Imo State Capital - collapsed from the foundation level on Sunday August 13, 2017, at about 3am, claiming four souls and leaving scores severely injured.
Dr. Nnajiofor (in black) flanked by the OCDA Management team
The Rostrum Emergency crew that was present at the scene of the incident gathered that the affected structure was uncompleted, yet people were resident in it. It suffices to say that all the victims of the untold event were all resident of the building.
This is happening barely few weeks after almost four buildings reportedly collapsed in different localities in Owerri. It would be recalled that the areas in question were respectively Umuguma, Obinze and Oforola, all in Owerri West L.G.A as well as Ulakwo in Owerri North L.G.A.
While reacting to the question thrown to her by the Rostrum crew, the General Manager (GM) of the Owerri Capital Development Authority (OCDA) Dr. Mrs. Chika Nnajiofor who was flanked by the Authority's management, disclosed that approval was never sought by the developer handling the project, as she further unequivocally stated her administration's readiness to fish out the bad eggs among the land developers within the "15 kilometres radius" of the Capital Territory.
Dr. Nnajiofor who assumed duty barely two months ago, and happened to be the first female GM of the Authority, frowned over the situation whereby prospective landlords would prefer to hire quacks to carry out a certain building project, to engaging qualified professionals; hence, said that the OCDA under her watch was prepared to partner with all the various concerned professional bodies domiciled in the state.
All efforts put together to speak with the owner of the affected property proved abortive, as reports indicated that he was "nowhere to be found". Rostrum equally learnt that the contractor was "on the run".
As at the time of filing this report, all the necessary authorities such as the Police, the OCDA, the Red Cross Emergency team, and the government officials, among others, had visited the scene of the unfortunate incident.
It's noteworthy that the state government led by Governor Rochas Okorocha who visited the arena to see things for himself, had ordered immediate demolition of a close-by 2-storey building that is likely to share similar fate with the collapsed one in no distant time towards averting further crisis in future.

Meanwhile, further investigations carried out by the Rostrum Engineering team disclosed the following intriguing four (4) facts:
1. No approval was issued to the developer by the state's body responsible for Development Control (OCDA).
2. The collapsed building had already been marked for demolition by the OCDA.
3. The building was a mere bungalow converted to a two-storey building.
4. Substandard building materials were deployed in the process by the contractor.

News II America Awaits Total Solar Eclipse
America Awaits Total Solar Eclipse
___________________________
All parts of the North America will reportedly experience total eclipse of the Sun on Monday, August 21, 2017, and such would be the first time in the said region since 99 years.
The Earth's Satellite - the Moon - is expected to pass in front of the Sun, casting complete darkness across swathes of the Earth's surface.
Though there will not be a perfect alignment in the United Kingdom (UK), the country is expected to witness a partial solar eclipse, where the Moon would cover only a part of the Sun.
Everyone in North America, parts of South America, Africa and Europe, will experience at least a partial Eclipse of the Sun.
Rostrum's Science team gathered that about fourteen states in the United States of America (U.S.A) will witness a total solar eclipse with more than two minutes of darkness descending in the middle of the day over the course of hundred minutes.
Solar Eclipse, or Eclipse of the Sun, occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, thereby blocking the light of the latter and a shadow of the Moon would therein cast on the former's surface. Total, partial and annular are three major types of solar eclipse.

Happening Now: Ailing Nigeria's President Meets with Media Team in London
Ailing Nigeria's President Meets with Media Team in London
______________________________________________
President Mohammadu Buhari is currently having a solidarity meeting with his Media team at the Abuja House in London, the United Kingdom. The team comprising most of the president's top media aides, was graciously received by the boss on Saturday 12th August 2017.
The warmth trip, which was led by the Nigeria's Information Minister Alhaji Lai Mohammed, could boast of the President's Special Adviser (SA) on Media and Publicity Mr. Femi Adesina, Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Diaspora Matters Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, SSA on Media and Publicity Mallam Garba Shehu, and Personal Assistant (PA) on Digital/Online Media Mrs. Lauretta Onochie.

In his words, President Buhari who expressed gratitude over the surprising visit, disclosed that he had finally recuperated, though was still asked by his doctor to further have a rest. He thus remarked that he was "obeying doctor's orders" rather than making the reverse be the case. The Nigeria's number-one citizen went further to extend his warmth regards to his fellow Nigerian citizens as he reassured that he would return soon to ably continue from where he stopped.
It would be recalled that President Buhari left the Nigeria's Seat of Power for the United Kingdom (UK) few months ago, for medical reasons.

Rostrum's telephone conversation with Mr. Adesina on Sunday, revealed that the gallant team is expected to return to Nigeria on Monday being August 14, 2017.

News I PDP holds 75th National Convention, Today
The PDP Holds Its 75th National Convention Today
______________________________________
It is now clear that all roads lead to Abuja, the Nigerian Federal Capital Territory, as the non-elective national convention of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) is graciously scheduled to take place today being Saturday, August 12, 2017.
Sen. Makarfi
The convention will apparently be the major meeting of the PDP faithful since the party's 14-month leadership impasse between Senators Ali Modu Sheriff and Ahmed Makarfi was nipped in the bud by the Nigeria's Apex Court, precisely on 12th July 2017.

The Chairman of the Convention Planning Committee who is as well the current Governor of Delta State, Sen. Ifeanyi Okowa stated that the convention would send a 'very strong signal to the ruling party, the APC and Nigerians at large', saying the PDP was set to reclaim power at the federal level come 2019.
Report indicates that all the PDP bigwigs, including immediate past President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan et al, are expected to be present at the epochal gathering.

Opinion I Engaging The Youth In Active Politics
ENGAGING THE YOUTH IN ACTIVE POLITICS AS WE MARK
2017 INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY
By Fred Doc Nwaozor
The last time I painstakingly
checked, 12th of August every year remained the International Youth
Day. This implies that today, Saturday August 12, the 2017 anniversary of the
said event is globally being commemorated. This year’s theme is ‘Youth building
peace’.
The International Youth Day is annually held on August 12 to celebrate
the achievements of the world’s youth and to encourage their participation in
enhancing global society. It also aims to promote ways to engage them in
becoming more actively involved in making positive contributions in their
respective communities.
The idea for International Youth
Day was proposed in 1991 by young people who were gathered in Vienna, Austria
for the first session of the United Nations (UN) World Youth Forum. The forum
recommended that an International Youth Day should be declared, especially for
fund-raising and promotional purposes to support the United Nations Youth Fund
in partnership with various youth organizations.
In 1998, a resolution proclaiming
August 12 as International Youth Day was adopted during the World Conference of
Ministers Responsible for Youth Affairs. That recommendation was later endorsed
in 1999 by the UN General Assembly. The International Youth Day was first
observed in the year 2000; one of the highlights of the event was the
presentation of the United Nations’ World Youth Awards to the eight Latin
American and Caribbean youth and youth-related organizations in Panama City.
It’s therefore needless to state that this year’s commemoration represents the
eighteenth edition of the worthwhile event.
It is generally noted that the
youth is the main productive class of any nation, and Nigeria is not an exception. In the same vein, anyone in a youthful stage sees
himself as one of the major parts of the engine room of any society he belongs;
this perception is not unconnected with the teachings of nature, which is obviously
ubiquitous.
It suffices to say that any existing society that
cannot boast of meaningful youths is not unlike a tree that is being deprived
of its major root. This is the reason any country that has lost its youths to
social vices lives like a blind man as well as invariably sleeps with both eyes
open.
Though the definition of the youth regarding
the age bracket varies from one school of thought to another; but in a
nutshell, it could be defined as a group of young people who are in their
adulthood stage. Thus, a youth is simply an adult or a fully grown person that
is young.
Considering the above definition,
you would agree to the fact that the youth is indeed the engine room of any
existing society. To this end, it is pathetic and devastating, to assert the least,
to see a society comprising irrational youths, or a group of young people that
do not know their left from their right.
It is not anymore news that presently, about eighty percent (80%) of the
overall youths in most countries in the world, particularly developing nations,
have intensely derailed thereby constituting series of inconsequential
cacophonies as well as societal menace in all nooks and crannies. An average member of such a misled group keeps
believing – albeit ignorantly – that he/she is being manipulated by a certain
set of individuals, without knowing that his future lies in his bare hand.
In Nigeria, for instance, during the
post-colonial era and thereabouts, virtually all the political positions in the
country were fully occupied by the youth who were mostly in their twenties
ranging from Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Alhaji Ahmadu Bello,
Chief Tafawa Balewa, Generals Murtala Mohammed, Theophilus Danjuma, Ibrahim
Babagida, Sani Abacha, Shehu Musa Yar’adua, Aguiyi Ironsi, Chukwuemeka
Odumegu-Ojukwu, Olusegun Obasanjo, and Mohammadu Buhari, among many others too
numerous to mention.
But today, the reverse is totally the case. You
would hardly see a youth in his thirties becoming a commissioner in his/her
home state, let alone occupying a ministerial position. Unequivocally, the
ongoing profound apathy coupled with complete loss of vision among most of the
new generational youths who occupy about one-third of the country’s population,
calls for an outcry.
As Nigeria joins the global
community to mark the 2017 International Youth Day, I’m soliciting for
awareness-raising campaigns to ensure that all the youths are fully sensitized
in order to revive the ongoing alarming rate of moral decadence, docility,
laxity, and mediocrity found among them.
Against this backdrop, I call on the
governments, non-governmental bodies, religious institutions, the civil
society, the mass media, and what have you, to join hands in this enticing
crusade so that in no distant time Nigeria can boast of a society filled with
only resourceful and conscience-driven youths. Our youths must be meant to
realize that it is indeed high time power is taken from this set of ‘old’
people currently occupying the seat of power in various jurisdictions.
We can contribute our respective quotas by
initiating or sponsoring both social and academic activities such as youth
seminars cum conferences on education and empowerment, concerts promoting the youth both home and in the Diaspora as well as various sporting events,
parades and mobile exhibitions that will showcase young people’s accomplishments
with a view to thoroughly sensitizing the mindset of the said group on their
civic responsibilities, rights and privileges.
As the next electioneering era is fast approaching, it is not needful to
reiterate that the overall Nigerian youths are bound to arise at such a
critical time like this. We can’t continue to procrastinate because a stitch in
time, they say, saves nine. Think about it!
