BREAKING: Nigeria Is Home Of Poorest People In The World - May

Nigeria Is Home of Poorest People In The World
===================================

The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (UK), Theresa May has branded Nigeria home to the "poorest people in the world".

It's noteworthy that the statement came barely a day ahead of her scheduled visit to the country.

The Prime Minister made the assertion while delivering a speech in Cape Town, South Africa, on Tuesday, 28th August 2018.

Mrs. May, scheduled to visit Nigeria on Wednesday 29th August 2018 being today, added that Africa has the highest number of poor people in the world, with Nigeria being the poorest.

She said: “Much of Nigeria is thriving, with many individuals enjoying the fruits of a resurgent economy, yet 87 million Nigerians live on less than $1 and 90 cents a day, making it home to more very poor people than any other nation in the world."

According to her, the focus is to achieve "inclusive growth", noting that UK would invest in Africa to create more jobs to combat poverty and at the same time tackle global challenges.

The Kofi Annan Foundation said the former UN boss, who hails from Ghana and won the Nobel Peace Prize for humanitarian work, died on Saturday, 18th August 2018 at the age of 80.

He died in Switzerland after a brief illness, according to a tweet by the said Foundation.

“It is with immense sadness that the Annan family and the Kofi Annan Foundation announce that Kofi Annan, former Secretary General of the United Nations and Nobel Peace Laureate, passed away peacefully on Saturday 18th August after a short illness”, the Foundation tweeted.

Mr. Annan served as U.N. Secretary General from 1996 to December 2006. He had earlier served in different capacities within the same organisation.
The Ghanaian was the second African to head the UN after Egypian Boutrous Boutrous Ghali, who was in charge between January 1992 to December 1996.

His tenure as UN secretary-general coincided with the Iraq War and the HIV/Aids pandemic.
After serving for 10 years at UN, Annan served as the UN special envoy for Syria, leading efforts to find a peaceful solution to the conflict.

Kofi Annan described his greatest achievement as the Millennium Development Goals which – for the first time – set global targets on issues such as poverty and child mortality.

Mr. Annan was born in Kumasi Ghana on 8th April 1938. After studying at Kwame Nkrumah University, he went on to study economics at Macalester College, International Relations from the Graduate Institute Geneva and Management at MIT.

UNBELIEVABLE: Jailed Lula Launches Presidential Campaign

Jailed Lula Launches Presidential Campaign
===============================

The Brazil’s Workers' Party (PT) officially named former President Luiz Inacio Lula de Silva as its presidential candidate on 4th August 2018 even though he is in prison on a corruption conviction that will almost certainly bar him from running.

Members of Workers' Party (PT) wear masks depicting Brazil's former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva during the National congress of the party in Sao Paulo, Brazil on Saturday.

Lula has been jailed since April 2018 but leads in opinion polls when included as a candidate. Unable to attend the convention, he addressed the party in a letter striking a defiant tone.

“Today our democracy is threatened,” Lula wrote. “They want to make the presidential election a rigged card game, excluding the name that is ahead in popular preference in all polls.”
A member of Workers' Party (PT) holds a mask depicting Brazil's former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva during the National Congress of the party in Sao Paulo, Brazil on August 4.

The convention ended without the PT declaring a vice presidential candidate, pushing electoral deadlines to the brink and adding a further degree of uncertainty to what is already Brazil’s most wide-open election in decades.

Parties have until Sunday to hold conventions and name candidates, although the consequences for missing that deadline are unclear with a separate filing deadline on Aug. 15 to declare nominees to the election authority.

PT leaders, including party president Senator Gleisi Hoffmann, denied they have a Plan B candidate to stand in Lula’s place should he be barred from running as is widely expected. Election law disqualifies people from standing for office if they have corruption convictions held up on initial appeal.

At least eight other parties held conventions on Saturday, largely ratifying expected presidential tickets or backing allied parties’ candidates.

The Brazilian Sustainability Network Party (REDE) nominated former senator and environment minister Marina Silva for her third presidential bid, while the center-right Brazil Social Democracy Party (PSDB) launched the candidacy of four-time governor of Sao Paulo Geraldo Alckmin.

Silva and Alckmin are polling second and third behind far-right candidate Jair Bolsonaro in early polling that excludes Lula.

Alckmin, who lost to Lula in 2006, said 14 years of Workers Party rule had left Brazil 13 million unemployed in a sputtering economy suffocated by an oversized government.

“Nobody tolerates a state infested by corruption anymore. We are going to unlock the economy by downsizing the state,” he told the party convention in Brasilia.

Alckmin has forged a broad nine-party coalition that will give him an advantage in television and radio advertising time when the campaign officially kicks off on August 16.

He picked former journalist and senator Ana Amelia as his running mate, a choice aimed at winning over female voters.

POLITICS: Mnangagwa Emerges Zimbabwe's Substantive President

 Mnangagwa Emerges Zimbabwe's Substantive President
______________________________________________

The interim President of Zimbabwe, Mr. Emmerson Mnangagwa has reportedly won the keenly contested Zimbabwe's presidential election, making him the second substantive president of the country, following Mr. Robert Mugabe.

With all 10 provinces declared, Mr. Mnangagwa won 50.8% of votes, compared to 44.3% for opposition leader Nelson Chamisa.

Police removed opposition officials from the electoral commission stage when they rejected the results.

The chairman of Mr. Chamisa's MDC Alliance said the count could not be verified.

By narrowly winning more than 50% of the vote, Mr. Mnangagwa avoids a run-off election against Mr. Chamisa.

The president said on Twitter he was "humbled", and called the result "a new beginning".

Mr. Mnangagwa, from the governing Zanu-PF party, took over as president last November 2017 from long-serving leader Mr. Mugabe.

Mr. Chamisa has insisted he is the winner of the presidential poll, telling reporters earlier on Thursday 2nd August 2018 that Zanu-PF was "trying to bastardize the result", something "we will not allow".

But the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) said there was "absolutely no skulduggery".

Rostrum Political crew gathered that six people died after opposition protests in Harare on Wednesday, 1st August 2018 over alleged vote-rigging.

The elections were the first since Mr. Mugabe, 94, was ousted and were intended to set Zimbabwe on a new path following years of repressive rule.

BREAKING: Court Orders Arrest Of INEC Boss

Court Orders Arrest Of INEC Boss
____________________________

Justice Stephen Pam of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has  given an order for the arrest of Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu for refusing to appear in court.

Rostrum gathered that that Justice Pam gave the warrant of arrest following Prof. Mahmood’s absence in court for the third time.

The INEC boss had on July 10, shunned a valid order summoning him to appear before Justice Pam who had on July 5 ordered Yakubu to appear before him to show cause why he should not be sent to prison for contempt of court.

The judge made the order for Mahmood to appear before the court while ruling on a preliminary objection by INEC and it’s Chairman in a contempt proceeding filed by Ejike Oguebego and Chuks Okoye, Chairman and Legal Adviser, respectively of the Anambra State Chapter of the People's Democratic Party (PDP).

JUST IN:: Buhari Embarks On Vacation. Leaves For London Tomorrow

Buhari Embarks On Vacation, Leaves For London Tomorrow
_________________________________________________

The Nigeria's President, Muhammadu Buhari would proceed on another vacation tomorrow being Friday, 3rd August 2018, as was announced by the presidency in the early hours of today.

Using the official Twitter handle, the presidency said the president would start the vacation in London, the United Kingdom (UK), and has transferred power to the Vice-President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo.

“President @MBuhari begins a 10-day working holiday from August 3, 2018. In compliance with Section 145 (1) of the 1999 Constitution, a letter has been transmitted to the President of the Senate, and the Speaker, House of Representatives to that effect.

“While the President is on vacation, Vice President @ProfOsinbajo will be in acting capacity as President.

"President Buhari will be in London for the holiday,” it said.

The trip comes amidst a busy week in Nigeria’s political landscape. Three governors in Mr. Buhari’s party have renounced their membership and joined the opposition where they hope to raise a formidable team to defeat the president in 2019.

The presidency did not elaborate on the specific assignments the president would engage in while away, a mission that seems more deliberate than oversight.

It's noteworthy that the president has embarked on several trips in the past in which he exercised functions that were not necessary parts of his disclosed itineraries.

The latest trip comes barely three months after the president traveled to London for Commonwealth leaders’ meeting in April. Although the event proper was slated for April 18-20, the president left Nigeria on April 9, raising questions about his health.

However, in some quarters, people are of the insinuation that the president's abrupt quest for vacation was informed by the pressure mounted by the incessant defections hitting the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on a daily basis.

UPDATED: Court Halts Swearing-In of 'New Imo Deputy Governor'

Court Halts Swearing-In Of 'New Imo Deputy Governor'
=========================================

AN Imo State High Court has stopped the swearing-in of the newly appointed Deputy Governor designate, Mr. Callistus Ekenze. The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Milletus Nlemadim, SAN, disclosed this yesterday when he tried to explain the absence of any High Court Judge to perform the swearing-in exercise scheduled for the Executive Council Chambers, Government House, Owerri. Although the AG did not give the name of the Judge or the plaintiff, he however confirmed that “the court has stopped the swearing-in of new Imo Deputy Governor designate.” Continuing, Nlemadim said: “The governor nominated Mr. Calistus Ekenze and that nomination was approved unanimously by the State House of Assembly. We came here today for the swearing-in but our attention has been drawn to an interim order, temporarily stopping the Chief Judge from performing this ceremony. “We have quickly taken the necessary steps to vacate that order and that will be concluded in a very short time. We shall for now shift the swearing-in ceremony in obedience to the order of court.” Prior to the briefing, speculations were rife that judges in the state were very angry with the state Governor, Rochas Okorocha and the lawmakers, over the way the administration had been flouting court orders. I’ll respect court order—Okorocha Governor Rochas Okorocha, yesterday said he would respect the court order stopping the swearing-in of the new deputy governor, Mr. Calistus Ekenze. Okorocha’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr Sam Onwuemeodo said this in a release to newsmen in Owerri. The release also said that the governor had called on his party members to remain law-abiding. As captured by the release, “the scheduled swearing-in of the new Deputy-Governor of the State, Sir Calistus Ekenze, on Tuesday, July 31, 2018 by 9am, could not take place again following the directive by the State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha that the Interim Court Order restraining the Chief Judge of the State from carrying out the exercise be fully obeyed. “The venue of the scheduled swearing-in, the Sam Mbakwe Exco Chamber was full to the brim by guests including senior government functionaries and APC leaders in the State when the governor’s directive came through the Attorney-General of the State, Barr. M.O. Nlemedim in respect of the court order. “The governor had insisted that the interim order be obeyed not minding some issues raised by senior lawyers in the government against the order, insisting that his administration must continue to obey valid court orders and also served on the government or agents of the government. “It should be recalled that the 19 members of the state House of Assembly had on Monday, July 30, 2018 impeached the former Deputy Governor, Prince Eze Madumere following the submission last Friday, of the report of the panel that investigated the accusations against him. “It should also be recalled that the Deputy-Governor had earlier got an order against the impeachment process, on July 5, 2018 by a State High Court, but the Order was vacated and described as a”nullity” by the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja presided over by Justice O.A Musa on July 16, 2018. “The governor has urged all Imo people and all the parties in the matter to remain law-abiding and allow the law to take its course.” Angry reactions trail impeachment Meantime, angry reactions have continued trailing the purported impeachment of the Deputy Governor of Imo State, Prince Eze Madumere by lawmakers. In his own reaction, the Deputy Governor’s counsel, Prince Ken Njemanze, SAN, said it was most regrettable that Imo State had been turned to a lawless state where rule of law had continuously been dragged to the mud with impunity. “Whatever the lawmakers did is a charade. It is not binding in any way on the status quo. There are two pending suits and there is a valid order of court against such act. “It must be stated clearly that the seven-man panel never invited the deputy governor to appear before it. They never advertised where they would sit. They never sat and they know about the pendency of the suits. One of the panelists was personally in court and witnessed the proceedings,” he said. In his reaction, a former Governor of Imo State, Ikedi Ohakim, described the impeachment of the deputy governor, Eze Madumere, as “a reckless action under Rochas Okorocha’s administration.” He spoke to Vanguard in Owerri, through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Collince Ughalla, adding that the Okorocha’s regime does not have respect for the law. Ohakim said: “It is a condemnable and reckless action. We want Imo people to note that the government of Okorocha is lawless. “The impeachment of the deputy governor did not follow due process. This afternoon, we learnt there was a court order stopping the impeachment.” A socio-cultural organisation, Olu Owerri, through its President General, Mr. Martin Opara and Secretary, Mr. Sylvester Nwogu insisted that the people of the state were happy with the performance of Madumere, adding that they would stand by the impeached Deputy governor till the end of the battle. “The Owerri zone socio-cultural organisation, Olu Owerri has condemned, in strongest terms, the purported illegal impeachment of the Imo State Deputy Governor, Prince Eze Madumere, MFR, by the compromised Imo House of Assembly led by Acho Ihim against valid court orders, insisting that the exercise is an action in futility which will not stand legal scrutiny. “We call on all lovers of democracy, rule of law and the judiciary in Nigeria to save the nation’s nascent democracy by halting acts of impunity and undemocratic tendencies, such as the illegal impeachment of a man whose only sin is standing for equity and justice,” the group said in a statement.

There was an intriguing melodrama at the Imo State Government House in Owerri on Tuesday, 31st July 2018 after a High Court sitting in the state capital halted the swearing-in of the deputy governor-designate, Mr. Callistus Ekenze who until Monday 29th July 2018, was the State's Head of Service.

 Madumere

Ekenze
Mr. Ezenze was to be sworn in to replace Prince Eze Madumere who was reportedly removed from office on Monday by members of the state's House of Assembly, despite a court order halting his removal proceedings.
But after waiting for four hours for the swearing-in rituals to commence on Tuesday in the Sam Mbakwe Hall, guests and government functionaries, including Governor Rochas Okorocha, later learnt that the court had restrained the Chief Judge (CJ) of the state, Justice Paschal Nnadi from going ahead with the swearing-in.
The news was broken by the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Militus Nlemadim.

The attorney general told the audience that there was a court order made on Tuesday morning by Justice Benjamin Iheaka in Owerri, stopping the CJ from swearing in the deputy governor-designate.

He, however, told the guests not to despair, saying efforts were being made to vacate the restraining order.

Mr. Nlemadim expressed optimism that the order would be vacated before the end of the day and Mr. Ekenze would still be sworn in on Tuesday.

Rostrum Political Team gathered that the CJ told the governor that he would not swear in the deputy governor-designate as long as there was a court order restraining him from doing so.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the CJ told the governor that it would be wrong for him to be seen to be disobeying a court order, considering his position as the chief judge of the state.

According to the source, the CJ advised the governor to get the restraining order vacated.
Rostrum further learnt that the interim order stopping the swearing-in ceremony was following a suit instituted by the impeached deputy governor on Tuesday morning challenging his impeachment by the state legislature.
Meanwhile, a human rights lawyer, Mr . Femi Falana (SAN), on Tuesday commended the Imo State judiciary for upholding the basic tenet of the rule of law by stopping the swearing-in of a new deputy governor for the state.

Mr. Falana said, “While commending the Imo State Judiciary for upholding the basic tenet of the rule of law, we call on the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and all democratic forces in the country to ensure that the restraining order is fully complied with.

“Let the legislators and Governor Okorocha purge themselves of contempt of court by continuing to recognise Prince Madumere as the Deputy Governor of Imo State, pending the determination of the pending suit before the state High Court on the validity of the impeachment proceedings adopted by the House of Assembly of Imo State.

SHOCKER: Saraki, Others Finally Defect To PDP

Saraki, Others Finally Defect To PDP
===========================
The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) continued to stew in crisis as the Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki, Kwara State Governor Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed and Nigeria’s Ambassador to South Africa, Alhaji Ahmed Ibeto, on Tuesday, 31st July 2018 finally left the party and returned to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

It's noteworthy that Alhaji Ibeto resigned from his ambassadorial position before leaving the APC.

Dr. Saraki’s defection ended weeks of speculations about his political future even as leaders of the APC, including President Muhammadu Buhari and the National Chairman, Mr. Adams Oshiomhole, redoubled efforts to persuade him to stay back in the party he helped to form in 2013.

But the Senate president, who first announced his exit on his Twitter handle, followed by a statement signed by him, said their interventions came a little too late, explaining that fifth columnists had done too much damage before they stepped in.

But in an ironic twist, the APC rose from its National Working Committee (NWC) meeting Tuesday night, issuing a query to the departed Saraki on alleged anti-party activities.

“We told you these people are irredeemable jokers,” a Saraki supporter said on Tuesday night, “They are querying someone who is no longer under their control.”

The party may issue more queries as the Sokoto State Governor, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal, too moves over to the PDP Wednesday in Sokoto.

A reliable source said he would be doing so with 23 of the 30 members of state House of Assembly.
Ahmed was the first to opt out through a statement by his media aide, Dr. Muideen Akorede, in the afternoon in Ilorin, saying that his people’s aspirations and expectations were no longer realisable in the APC.

Saraki in a lengthy 20-paragraph statement said he was forced out of the party by fifth columnists.
According to him, some national leaders of APC who were opposed to resolving the crisis within the party through dialogue served as fifth columnists which led to his leaving the party eventually.

His words: “There are some people in the party leadership hierarchy, who did not think dialogue was the way forward and therefore chose to play the fifth columnists. These individuals went to work and ensured that they scuttled the great efforts and the good intentions of other leaders of the party. Perhaps, had these divisive forces not thrown the cogs in the wheel at the last minutes, and in a manner that made it impossible to sustain any trust in the process, the story today would have been different.”

Saraki said it took him a long time to quit the party, adding: “If anything at all, I have tarried for so long and did all that was humanly possible, even in the face of great provocation, ridicule and flagrant persecution, to give opportunity for peace, reconciliation and harmonious existence.

“Perhaps, more significantly, I am mindful of the fact that I carry on my shoulder a great responsibility for thousands of my supporters, political associates and friends, who have trusted in my leadership and have attached their political fortunes to mine. However, it is after an extensive consultation with all the important stakeholders that we have come to this difficult but inevitable decision to pitch our political tent elsewhere; where we could enjoy greater sense of belonging and where the interests of the greatest number of our Nigerians would be best served.”

Further justifying his defection and taking full responsibility for this decision, he emphasised that it was a decision “that has been inescapably imposed on me by certain elements and forces within the APC who have ensured that the minimum conditions for peace, cooperation, inclusion and a general sense of belonging did not exist”.

“They have done everything to ensure that the basic rules of party administration, which should promote harmonious relations among the various elements within the party were blatantly disregarded. All governance principles which were required for a healthy functioning of the party and the government were deliberately violated or undermined. And all entreaties for justice, equity and fairness as basic precondition for peace and unity, not only within the party, but also the country at large, were simply ignored, or employed as additional pretext for further exclusion,” he said.

He, however, gave kudos to both Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, for their efforts in ensuring that he remained in the party.
Saraki announced that he was returning to the PDP that he left four years ago, which has learnt from his past mistakes.

He said: “For me, I leave all that behind me. Today, I start as I return to the party where I began my political journey, the PDP. When we left the PDP to join the then nascent coalition of APC in 2014, we left in a quest for justice, equity and inclusion; the fundamental principles on which the PDP was originally built but which it had deviated from. We were attracted to the APC by its promise of change. We fought hard along with others and defeated the PDP.

“In retrospect, it is now evident that the PDP has learnt more from its defeat than the APC has learnt from its victory. The PDP that we return to is now a party that has learnt its lessons the hard way and have realized that no member of the party should be taken for granted; a party that has realised that inclusion, justice and equity are basic precondition for peace; a party that has realised that never again can the people of Nigeria be taken for granted.

“I am excited by the new efforts, which seeks to build the reborn PDP on the core principles of promoting democratic values; internal democracy; accountability; inclusion and national competitiveness; genuine commitment to restructuring and devolution of powers; and an abiding belief in zoning of political and elective offices as an inevitable strategy for managing our rich diversity as a people of one great indivisible nation called Nigeria.”

Announcing his own defection, Ahmed’s media aide said: “Following due consultations with the people, and in response to calls by major stakeholder groups in the state, Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, today defected to the PDP,” adding: “Having realised that the APC can longer serve as a platform for achieving the aspirations and expectations of his people.”

JUST IN: Buhari Elected As ECOWAS Boss

Buhari Elected As ECOWAS Boss
=========================

The Nigeria's President, Muhammadu Buhari was on Tuesday, 31st July 2018 in Lome, Togo elected the new Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The president’s election was one of the highpoints of the 53rd Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS which held in the Togolese capital.

In his acceptance remarks, the Nigerian leader who commended his colleagues for his election, noted that he did not offer himself for the post, “but you refused to take my no for an answer.”

He, however, told his fellow leaders that, “I am truly humbled and pledge to serve and work with all of you to deliver on peace, security, good governance and socio-economic development” of the sub-region, and “take our organisation to greater heights.”

President Buhari also commended his immediate predecessor and President of Togo, Faure Gnassingbe, for successfully hosting two important meetings of the Joint Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) and ECOWAS as well as the 53rd Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS.

The new boss had earlier been presented with the emblem of ECOWAS by the outgoing chairman, while the next meeting of the organisation will take place in Abuja, the NIgeria's capital city on December 21, 2018.

DRAMA: APC Legislators Serve Impeachment Notice on Ortom

APC Legislators Serve Impeachment Notice on Ortom
=======================================

It was dramatic on Monday, 30th July 2018 as a factional group led by the impeached Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Mr. Terkibir Ikyange abruptly commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Samuel Ortom, alleging fraudulent activities, non payment of workers’ salaries and non performance as reasons.

The members, numbering 12, were said to have moved into the Assembly complex amidst tight security around 6am on the said date.
Some youths who allegedly got wind of the sitting were reported to have invaded the House but they were reportedly dispersed by security men.
It was gathered that the session lasted for about one hour in which the members also suspended the 15 members of the group loyal to the governor.

It will be noted that the House consists of 30 members.

The group loyal to Governor Ortom, led by the new Speaker, Mr. Titus Uba, claimed to have 22 members, while it said that the other group loyal to Senator George Akume have eight members.

But Ikyange said that 12 lawmakers on Monday met and took the decision to commence impeachment process against the governor.

He noted that the group had got an order from court directing banks to release to it (group of lawmakers) details of accounts allegedly opened for some workers but which were allegedly used to siphon money.

Addressing journalists at his official residence at Commissioner’s Quarters along Otukpo Road, Ikyange said that 12 members sat to review the political development in the state and subsequently took a decisive decision.

“Two decisions were taken: one, the members looked at action of some members who invaded the House of Assembly, causing unrest in the state.
“The conduct is not acceptable; we have sent the 15 members on six-month suspension.

“Another item was the motion brought by the Majority Leader of the House to give a notice of impeachment, stating the offences the governor has committed in the past three years.

“We looked at it and saw that it had merit. The House found N50m fraud in each of the 23 local governments, running into N33bn in the past three years.

“Also, the non payment of salaries of seven months to state workers, 11 months’ salaries being owed local government workers and pensioners up to 15 months, as well as non performance which has affected the economy of the state,” Ikyange said.

When asked whether the members formed a quorum, Ikyange said that 12 members sat for the proceedings.

But in a swift response, the group loyal to Governor Ortom which held its own plenary session at the Banquet Hall of the Government House, Makurdi, also suspended the other members who held session with the impeached Speaker.

The group said that, contrary to Ikyange’s claim, only seven lawmakers were present at the meeting.

Hon. Paul Biam, the ‘majority leader’ of the G-22, described the sitting by Ikyange-led group as “illegal,” saying that the Titus Uba group had also secured court injunction restraining the impeached Speaker from parading himself as Speaker.

“In spite of the injunction restraining the former Speaker from parading himself as Speaker of the eighth (Benue State House of ) Assembly, this morning, as we approached the Assembly, we found security men armed to teeth with armoured vehicle who refused us entry.

“We learnt that seven members, including the suspended Speaker and without the mace, sat without forming a quorum.

“We have, however, suspended the seven members,” Biam said.
When asked why the members at Monday sitting were 18 instead of 22 as claimed, the ‘G-22 majority leader’ said that four members had gone to Abuja to honor the invitation of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

However, while Biam was still speaking, one of the four absentee members, Hon. Sule Audu, walked in.

JUST IN: Zimbabwe Elects President Today

Zimbabwe Goes To The Polls Today
--------------------------------------------

Zimbabwe goes to the polls today being Monday, 30th July 2018 in its first election since authoritarian leader Mr. Robert Mugabe was ousted last year, with alleged ballot fraud and the likelihood of a disputed result clouding voting day.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Mugabe's former ally in the ruling Zanu-PF party, faces opposition leader Nelson Chamisa of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) in a historic vote for the Southern African nation.

Mr. Mugabe, 94, who was ousted by the military in November 2017, made a surprising intervention on the eve of the elections, calling for voters to throw Zanu-PF out of office.

Zimbabwe's generals shocked the world last year when they seized control and ushered Mnangagwa to power after Mugabe allegedly tried to position his wife Mrs. Grace Mugabe to be his successor.

Mr. Mnangagwa, 75, who promises a fresh start for the country despite being from the Zanu-PF elite, is the front-runner with the advantage of covert military support, a loyal state media and a ruling party that controls government resources.

But Chamisa, 40, who has performed strongly on the campaign trail, hopes to tap into a young population that could vote for change.

The election is Zimbabwe's first without Mugabe, who led ZANU-PF to power in a vote when the country became independent from British colonial rule in 1980 -- and ruled for 37 years.

Speaking at his sprawling mansion in Harare on Sunday 29th July 2018, Mr. Mugabe said that he hoped the election would "thrust away the military form of government."

"I cannot vote for those who tormented me," Mugabe said, hinting he could vote for MDC.

A clean vote?
As Zimbabwe's hectic politics reached fever pitch, Mnangagwa claimed that Mugabe's remarks proved that Chamisa was in an alliance with Mugabe.

But Chamisa also spoke out saying: "I have nothing to do with what president Mugabe would want to say as a voter. He is a citizen."

Elections under Mugabe were marred by fraud and often deadly violence, and this year's campaign has been dogged by accusations that the result will be rigged.

The MDC has raised repeated allegations of a flawed electoral roll, ballot paper malpractice, voter intimidation, bias in the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) and free food handed out by the ruling party.

But campaigning has been relatively unrestricted and peaceful.

"After years of stasis, the events of November 2017 gave Zimbabwe the chance to dream again," Mnangagwa said Sunday in an address on state radio.

"As we have always said, the elections will be free, non-violent and credible."
A recent Afrobarometer survey of 2 400 people put Mnangagwa on 40% and Chamisa on 37%, with 20% undecided.

Mr. Mnangagwa, who is accused of involvement in election violence and fraud under Mugabe, invited international observers - including the previously-banned European Union (EU) team -- to the poll.

The EU team will deliver a preliminary report later in the week.

Desperate for investment
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has warned of alleged intimidation and threats of violence in the run-up to polling day, but said it was encouraging to see open rallies and peaceful demonstrations.

The next government must tackle mass unemployment and an economy shattered by the Mugabe-backed seizure of white-owned farms, the collapse of agriculture, hyperinflation and an investment exodus.

Previously solid health and education services are in ruins and millions have fled abroad to seek work.

Life expectancy has only just recovered to its 1985 level of 61 years.
"The governing Zanu-PF party needs to maintain a semblance of free and fair elections in order to attract fresh foreign investment," said the London-based EXX Africa business risk consultancy.
"However, there remain serious concerns over vote credibility."

With 5.6 million registered voters, the results of the presidential, parliamentary and local elections are due by August 4.

A run-off vote is scheduled for September 8 if no presidential candidate wins at least 50 percent in the first round.

"I'm excited, I'm voting for the first time," said Tawanda Mudondo, 18, who sells phone chargers on the street corner.

"I just want a government that will create jobs. I passed my exams but could not go to university. Our economy is trashed."

BREAKING: USA Records Greatest Economic Growth Since 2014

USA Records Greatest Economic Growth Since 2014
--------------------------------------------------------------------

The United States' economy accelerated to a 4.1 percent pace of growth in the second quarter, the fastest since 2014, letting President Donald Trump claim a win for his policies even though expansion is projected to cool.

The annualized rate of gains in gross domestic product was just shy of the 4.2 percent median forecast in a Bloomberg survey. It followed first-quarter growth of 2.2 percent that was revised from 2 percent, the Commerce Department reported Friday. Consumer spending grew 4 percent, more than estimated, while nonresidential business investment climbed at a 7.3 percent clip.

Trump seized the chance to declare his policies, including the biggest tax overhaul since the Reagan era, a success, calling the data “amazing” and “very sustainable.” The likelihood is nevertheless that the pace of expansion will slow as the effects of tax cuts fades, companies pull back in the face of foreign tariffs or strong dollar and the Federal Reserve raises interest rates further.

“The economy is doing quite well,” said Michael Feroli, chief U.S. economist at JP Morgan Chase & Co. “It will be hard to repeat this performance on a sustained basis.”

Illustrating the volatility of some elements of GDP, net exports contributed 1.06 percentage point to the pace of growth, the most since 2013, partly on a surge in soybean shipments ahead of retaliatory tariffs. Inventories subtracted 1 point, the most since 2014, Commerce said, citing soybean stocks as well as those of drugs and sundries and petroleum and related products.

Fed policy makers are expected to continue their gradual pace of interest-rate hikes aimed at keeping the economy from overheating, without moving so fast that they could choke off growth. The dollar and yields on 10-year Treasuries declined after the report, which also showed inflation excluding food and energy was lower than estimated.

OPINION II Today Is World Hepatitis Day

ELIMINATING HEPATITIS IN NIGERIA

By Fred Doc Nwaozor

Today, 28th July, the world over is commemorating the 2018 edition of World Hepatitis Day. This year’s theme is “Eliminate Hepatitis”.

The event, which is observed annually on July 28, was inaugurated by World Health Organization (WHO) under the auspices of the United Nations (UN) to raise global awareness on hepatitis or a group of infectious diseases known as Hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E, and to encourage the prevention, diagnosis, as well as the treatment.

The first global World Hepatitis Day was marked on May 19, 2008 through the effort of the World Hepatitis Alliance in collaboration with various patient groups. The commemoration received an international endorsement following the adoption of a resolution during the 63rd World Health Assembly held in May 2010. The date of the event was later changed to July 28 each year by the assembly, in honour of the birthday of Nobel Laureate Baruch Samuel Blumberg – the man who discovered the Hepatitis B virus.

No rational man boasts of anything if his health condition is at stake. Suffice to say; a healthy life remains the most precious possession that ever comes to a man regardless of his/her status or age. In the world today, there are millions of illnesses or diseases in existence coupled with the ones that seem to have no specific cause or cure. Among these diseases, some are often referred to be stubborn regarding their mode of cure while some are seen to be deadly. No doubt, hepatitis is one of those stubborn or deadly illnesses in existence.

Hepatitis is a medical condition which is defined as an inflammation of one of the most vital organs in the human body known as the Liver. It is usually characterized by the presence of inflammatory cells in the tissue of the organ. The inflammatory condition can be self-limiting or can heal on its own; but on the contrary, it can progress to fibrosis or cirrhosis.

Hepatitis may occur with limited or no symptoms, but often leads to jaundice, poor appetite, and a feeling of unease. It is referred to as acute when it lasts less than six months, and chronic when it persists longer. Globally, hepatitis viruses are the most common causes of the condition, but hepatitis can as well be caused by other infections, autoimmune diseases, or toxic substances such as alcohol, certain medications, and some industrial organic solvents and plants.

Initial features of acute hepatitis are of non-specific flu-like symptoms, which are invariably common to almost all acute viral infections, and may include fatigue, muscle and joint aches, fever, nausea diarrhoea, vomiting, and headache. More specific symptoms which could be present in acute hepatitis from any cause are profound loss of appetite, aversion to smoking among smokers, excretion of dark urine, and abdominal discomfort.

A small proportion of people with acute hepatitis usually progress to acute liver failure, in which the liver would be unable to remove harmful substances from the blood thereby leading to confusion and coma due to hepatic encephalopathy. The acute liver failure may also result to the production of blood proteins which often leads to peripheral edema and bleeding.

More so, a chronic hepatitis, which is commonly identified through blood test, is usually characterized with no symptoms at all. It often leads to the presence of jaundice which indicates advanced liver damage. On physical examination, there may be enlargement of the liver. In the same vein, women with autoimmune hepatitis mostly experience abnormal menstruation, lung scarring, inflammation of the thyroid gland and kidneys.

Aside the aforementioned two major classes of hepatitis, it is invariably grouped and recognized by medical experts based on its common causes. On this note, the different types of hepatitis in existence that are widely recognized include, Viral hepatitis, Alcoholic hepatitis, Toxic and drug-induced hepatitis, Ischemic hepatitis, Giant cell hepatitis, just to mention but a few. Common causes of viral hepatitis, which is the most rampant type, are the five unrelated hepatotropic viruses known as hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E viruses.

There is an estimate that hepatitis affects hundreds of millions of people worldwide thereby causing acute or chronic disease and killing close to 1.4 million people every year. Currently, approximately five hundred (500) million people worldwide are suffering from either hepatitis B or hepatitis C. If left untreated or unmanaged, hepatitis B or C can lead to advanced liver scarring known as cirrhosis and other complications including liver cancer or liver failure.

While many people worry more about contracting diseases like HIV than hepatitis, the reality is that every year, at least 1.3 million people worldwide die as a result of either hepatitis B or C faster than they would in the case of HIV/AIDS. Needless to say that, hepatitis is indeed a deadly disease. Considering this fact, it is pathetic and devastating to note that many hepatitis carriers are yet to realize that they are living with the disease.

Hepatitis groups, patients as well as advocates worldwide, take part in series of events on every July 28 to mark the World Hepatitis Day. The World Hepatitis Day is one of the eight official global public health campaigns being marked by the WHO. As Nigeria joins the international community to commemorate the remarkable event, there’s need for collective support as regards creation of awareness on this silent killer known as ‘Hepatitis’.

The World Hepatitis Day provides an opportunity to focus on actions such as, but not limited to, raising awareness on the different forms of hepatitis, their common causes and how they are transmitted; strengthening prevention, screening, and control of viral hepatitis and other related diseases; increasing hepatitis B vaccine coverage cum integration into national immunization programmes; as well as coordinating a global response to hepatitis.

As Nigeria joins the global community to mark this remarkable day, it’s needless to state that all hands are expected to be on deck towards ensuring that this killer disease that has been a colossal societal menace for decades now is duly eliminated. Think about it!
